Pasture Walk May 21st @ Huse Family Farm

Free Grazing Workshop on Schoharie County Farm

On Friday, May 21st, the Central NY Resource Conservation & Development Council is teaming up with the Hudson Mohawk RC&D Council in sponsoring a pasture workshop from 10:00AM to 2:00PM at Stonebroke Farm, a 400 head all grass-fed cattle farm owned by the Huse Family at 456 Karker Road in Warnerville, NY.  Topics to be covered on the tour include issues related to calving, managing spring grass so it doesn’t get ahead of you, and using holistic decision making to improve management decisions on the farm.  There will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions and share information among fellow graziers.  The session is being co-sponsored by the Mohawk Valley Graziers and the Watershed Agriculture Council.  The workshop is free and participants are encouraged to bring their own lunch.  The Watershed Agriculture Council will be taking a van and picking up those interested in carpooling from Delaware County.  The van will be stopping at points including Walton, Delhi, and Stamford.

This tour is a joint session of the Hudson Mohawk Grass Masters and Mohawk Valley Graziers, both of which are farmer-to-farmer grazing groups.  The Hudson Mohawk Grass Masters was started last year by the Hudson Mohawk RC&D Council and meets bi-monthly, mainly on participants’ farms.  The Mohawk Valley Graziers was started this year by the Montgomery County Soil and Water Conservation District and Fulton Montgomery Cornell Cooperative Extension.  Central NY RC&D has a long history of grazing educational activities, including Northeast Grasstravaganza and recently received a Northeast Sustainable Agriculture Research & Education grant to conduct professional development training in comprehensive grazing planning.  For an application and other participant information on this SARE funded program contact Nancy Glazier at nig3@cornell.edu or 585-315-7746.

The Central NY & Hudson Mohawk RC&D Councils are 501 (c) 3 non-profit organizations working in partnership with the USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service and the local community on economic development and environmental conservation projects. They are equal opportunity providers and employers.  For more information on the workshop please contact Kim Totten at kimberly.totten@ny.usda.gov or call 607-334-3231, ext. 4 or Elizabeth Marks at Elizabeth.Marks@ny.usda.gov or call (518) 828-4385 x 105.
