NorthEast SARE Comprehensive Grazing Planning Training
NorthEast SARE Comprehensive Grazing Planning Training
Do you wish to improve the impact of your grazing technical assistance?
Do you believe a comprehensive approach to grazing planning is essential?
Have you been looking for ways to be more effective in working with farmers?
Are you interested in exploring new ideas on how grazing can be more effectively planned, marketed and implemented in your area?
If you answered “yes” to any of the above questions, consider joining other grazing technicians/ specialists for support and camaraderie while learning about providing grazing technical assistance consistent with a whole farm (holistic) perspective.
Through a Northeast SARE grant individuals in New York and surrounding states can participate in a multi-year program developed specifically for technical assistance providers, educators, and farmer-educators. Eligible applicants include those providing grazing assistance that are with cooperative extension, conservation districts, NRCS, NGOs or are farmer-educators.
This training will cover strategies to help farmers meet farm goals in profitability, ecological improvement and social well-being. Participants will also be better suited to help farmers meet obligations for conservation programming (EQIP, State Environmental Protection Fund).
The emphasis will be on learning about effective decision making and meeting farmers “where they are.” Participants will learn the practical/technical side of grazing management, economics, marketing, ecological health, animal behavior, infrastructure design, and ancillary topics.
The training will look at the role of farm resources, asking the right questions, understanding the constraints on the farm/farmer, encouraging a higher adoption rate and building a strong farmer/educator relationship. Participants will experience looking at real life scenarios, conducting on-farm evaluations, developing a grazier’s eye and crafting that knowledge with their own farmers. This allows participants to recognize the differences of individual farms and address issues such as: How many animals? How many paddocks? How frequent and when to move animals? Where do we put the water tubs and laneways? How does barn feeding affect grazing? What are the benefits of creating and utilizing a farm/family goal?
Specific Topics will include:
Assisting farmers in creating workable grazing plans, goal setting, holistic grazing planning principles, charting a year round feed plan, extending the grazing season, grazing infrastructure, powerful communication & effective training (utilizing case studies, establishing successful grazing learning groups, improving pasture walks), reading the land, grass management, assessing forage volume, carrying capacity, paddock productivity, forage quality, animal behavior and other considerations such as wildlife habitat and fallow land regeneration.
