Reflection Poem
Reflection by the Grass Whisperer
The earth was wet from a pre-dawn rain
As I made my way up the worm covered lane
I pass the springs that bubble from an underground river
While the cold fall wind makes me shiver
I pause on the first of many rolling hills
I can almost imagine the horse drawn plows clanging as they till
My roots are entrenched on this precious piece of earth
This little farm has been a source of great worth
Not in terms of money you see
But as a family’s need for spirituality
On the next plateau I continue my hike
Realizing I’m near the place where I almost lost my life
For the wrath of Mother Nature struck me with a bolt of lightning
Remembering that horrible day was quite frightening
Just then I feel a soothing warmth on my back
As the sun somehow rewards me for staying on track
Tears well up in my tired eyes
While a feeling of pride and sadness makes me cry
Today is the last paddock the plump, slick cattle will graze
As they dot the field like an intricate maze
I remember when they started the spring season
All unruly, independent and nervous without good reason
Now they come up to me in one trusting herd
Waiting patiently for me to move the fence as their fear has been cured
We care for these guys like Mother Nature would
Providing them with abundant grass as any good grazier should
I wish they could stay and enjoy our farm till their life is complete
Unfortunately things will change drastically at the feedlot with corn and concrete
We have been through a lot of pleasant times and adversity
Shipping them to an unfamiliar place seems like a travesty
The world’s people need our good beef though
As the saying goes “we reap what we sow”
I am proud to have raised them in a proper way
With good grass, clean water and a kind voice spoken each day
So on this day of high emotion and reflection
I hope our farm, family and animals will be blessed by the lord’s protection
